    Lab Rooms
    The room 4225 is booked for your convenience these times:
    • Mondays 17-21. Course assistants available.
    • Tuesdays 13-21. Course assistants available.
    • Wednesdays 13-21. Course assistants available.
    • Thursdays 9-12. Course assistants not available.
    • Thursdays 17-21. Course assistants available.

    During these booked timeslots, you have the right to politely "throw out" other students, not belonging to this course if there is a lack of available and suitable computers. Computers are reserved on a first come first served basis. The rooms used for the tutorials, are located at 4:th floor, south corridor in the "ED-huset". See MAP HERE.

    Deadlines for the tutorials
  • Lab 1+2+3, Deadline: Thursday, week 2.
  • Lab 4+5, Deadline: Thursday, week 3.
  • Lab 6, Deadline: Thursday, week 4.
  • Lab 7 / "Project": Deadline: Thursday, week 7.

  • Instructions:
    Start with all tutorials as soon as you can. The deadlines only indicate the very latest time to finish. Tutorials 1-6 walk you through several techniques, step by step. Tutorial 7 is the main tutorial where you implement the techniques yourself, without step-by-step guidance and may take you considerably more time than tutorials 1-6 all together.

    Notes on project: Lab7 (called Project in the zip-file above) is the major tutorial. You have the following choices there: (a) follow the normal instructions from "project.pdf"; or (b) use Blender instead of 3DS Max, in which case you will start with the instructions from "blender.pdf" and later follow the programming instructions in the second part of "project.pdf".

    2012 - Tutorials

    Download the tutorials as a single .zip file, OpenGLTutorials.zip.

    Note: Tutorial 7 can optionally be replaced by a ray-tracing lab, which will be downloadable from here.
    Note2: Friday Nov. 23rd, 13:15 - Extra lecture/supervision on path-tracer lab, in lab rooms. Erik Sintorn will go through the lab moments and explain the theoretical parts in more detail.

    2011 - Tutorials

    Tutorials for 2011 are available as a single .zip file, OpenGLTutorials_2011-updated.zip.

    Please read the included ReadMe.pdf. Windows users should, in the Labs, use the `all_2010.sln', as VisualStudio 2010 is installed on the student computers. For Linux users, there's an additional file, README.linux, that should help you get started with the labs in Linux.

    Support is mainly provided by the assistants at the times specified above, although for Linux-specific problems you can also contact Markus by email.

    Note: Officially, we only support building and running the labs on the machines in the labs booked for the Computer Graphics course. The labs might work on other machines, but you're basically on your own (of course, you can still ask for support if you run into a problem, we just might not be able to help you).

    Clarification on Lab7 and 3D Studio Max:We've been informed that the licenses for 3D Studio Max (and other Autodesk software) may expire / may have expired on 2011-11-23. (In the evening lab on 2011-11-23 3D Studio Max worked fine on StuDAT.) Licenses for Autodesk software with 2012 versions have been updated. 3D Studio Max is used in the project/lab7. Instructions exist for using Blender instead of 3D Studio Max (see below). You may choose whichever variant works best for you. (If you wish to use a different 3D modelling package, we won't be able to provide support or instructions, but generally, that's OK too. Don't spend too much time on the modelling part, though.)

    Doing the project/lab7 with Blender: You'll need to download two files: the instructions, and the data files. Follow the instructions in the PDF. Note: at this point, the instructions are somewhat experimental. If you run into issues, report these to the assistants (preferably Markus, since it's his fault that the instructions for blender exist.)

    • 2011-11-24: blender instructions (PDF) and blender_data.zip updated (again) to fix some texture problems when exporting.
    • 2011-11-24: blender_data.zip updated to include the wood texture for the house.
    • 2011-11-24: Autodesk software with 2012 versions should now work (and will likely do so for the whole course).
    • 2011-11-24: Blender data files are now provided in a .zip.
    • 2011-11-23: Added blender instructions for the project.
    • 2011-11-07: Small update to Lab4 (mismatch between description and the code)
    • 2011-11-07: Fixed some problems where the Linux build would prefer the included libraries (which are for StuDAT computers only) over locally installed ones. This only affects machines outside of the booked labs.

    2010 - Update: Better OBJ-model loader

    New, improved .obj loader. OBJ-models are loaded much faster. The loader also translates backslashes in paths to forward slashes, which allows linux users to import files written by 3D Studio Max without manually fixing the file names.

    To use, download the OBJModel.cpp file and use it to replace the old one in the glutil/ directory.

    2010 - Update: Visual Studio 2010 Project files

    Note: If you have not previously downloaded the tutorials, you can ignore this, as the zip file has been updated.

    To add Visual Studio 2010 project files (should work for Express edition), download and unzip the OLD OpenGLTutorials_vs2010_projects.zip for 2010 into the same folder as the OpenGLTutorials you created earlier. This will NOT replace any files (except if you have previously tried to upgrade, any replacements of vcxproj files is fine). From now on use all_2010.sln, instead of all.sln. (Due to "interesting" decisions as Microsoft, automatic upgrade to Visual Studio 2010 fails.)

    2010 - Information about the 2010 Year Course

    • Working in pairs (groups of 2 persons) is recommended. In rooms 4211, 4213, 4215, you should be able to login using your normal student accounts. Start by downloading and unpacking the zip file from 2010 for tutorials 1-6 (and 3D world tutorial). Then read the document ReadMe.doc/pdf. Currently, all of the tutorials are approved by the course assistant by showing the code and executables. Answers to questions in the lab PMs should be written down. Both group members must be present at the approval (to be able to hear feedback from the course assistant).
    • You may do the tutorials at home, on a laptop or wherever you are comfortable with the computers.
    • To pass the tutorials, you must present your solutions to the course assistants, Erik Sintorn, Ola Olsson, or Markus Billeter, or any other lab assistant at times of their presence. See schedule above. You may present on your laptop, or on the computers in the booked tutorial rooms or any other computer close enough for the lab assistants being willing to go there.
    • All tutorials are adapted for Windows and Microsoft Developer Studio - Visual C++. Some of them can be executed under Unix/Linux, but then limited support is provided.
    • If you do the tutorials elsewhere than in the booked rooms and need to install Microsoft Visual C++, I have heard that you can borrow a CD from helpdesk with Microsoft Visual C++. It is also downloadable here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/ . Students that can login to studieportalen can also find the : full version of Microsoft Visual C++ here under the link to MicrosoftAcademy.
    • Information in Swedish for students not very familiar with the Windows-environment.
    • A Quick Introduction to C++ can be found here with example code. This course does not require preknowlege of C++, but requires knowledge of C, Java or similar. C++ is similar enough to make it very easy to quickly learn. C++ is the language mainly used among all companies in the computer graphics industry.
    • If you're still reading this, stop. Seriously. This is outdated information. Page will be updated for 2011 soon(tm)!
