Research Methods for Data Science (2018/2019)

Master's Thesis Proposal Exercise

In this exercise you should write a proposal for a Master's thesis, following the advice given in the lecture. Please read the advice on writing a thesis proposal on the department's web pages. You might also find Peter Damashke's advice on Writing a Research Proposal useful, and perhaps How to write a great research proposal by Simon Peyton Jones and Alan Bundy (although you can ignore the discussion of funding agencies).

You can, if you wish, write a proposal for this course that is not about the Master's project you intend to carry out - but you must write a convincing proposal even so.

The intention is, of course, to help you write a good proposal for your real Master's thesis, which is due on 21 October (if you intend to start your project in period 2). Just as with your real Master's thesis, you are permitted - even encouraged - to work in a group of two people.

You should submit a first draft of your thesis proposal to the Fire submission system by 11 October, even if your proposal is still incomplete. We aim to give you feedback by 16 October, which you can then use to prepare the final version. You are encouraged to drop in to discuss your project proposal in person on 16 October. Submit your final version to the Fire submission system by 21 October.

If this is your real thesis proposal and you plan to start your Master's project in reading period 2, you should also send your proposal by e-mail to the Master's thesis coordinator by 21 October 2018. If you plan to start your project in reading period 3, the deadline for sending your proposal to the Master's thesis coordinator is 12 December 2018.
