Common Errors and Mistakes

• Punkt + stor bokstav. Undvik meningsbyggnadsfel. Se till att sätta punkt (istället för t ex komma) där det ska vara så. Se t ex comma splice nedan.

• In addition, use comma after:
• In addition, ...
• First, ...
• Secondly, ...
• However,...
• Thus,...
• In paper XX,... . In 2002,... .
• Therefore,... etc.
• Note that the rules of using comma differ between languages.

• Use the american habit of having a comma also in front of the last item, e.g., cat, dog, and elephant. The reason is that this also works in British English but is not necessary (and less common).

• Example of a very common error called "comma splice":
  Incorrect: "The camera has a handle, for cell phones this handle is black."
  This should instead be written as:
  "The camera has a handle. For cell phones, this handle is black."

  Punkten ovan separerar två huvudsatser. Därför måste det antingen vara ny mening (dvs punkt + stor bokstav) eller konjunktion, som ", and", ", or" eller möjligen ";" om satserna är starkt sammankopplade och man inte vill ha punkt + stor bokstav. Men här är de inte tillräckligt starkt logiskt kopplade.
  Exempel: "I painted the house red; it is my favorite color." - uttrycker att det finns ett samband - dvs ";" representerar "since" eller "because" el dyl.

• Var noga med att sätta ut kommatecken korrekt i era meningar. Ni måste sätta ut komma där det skall vara komma. Generellt sett sätter elever ut alldeles för få kommatecken. Dessa är nödvändiga för att få korrekt betydelse av meningarna (vilket är extra viktigt för en vetenskaplig rapport) och är därför inte valfria att använda.
  Här har ni bra grundregler (observera att kommateringsregler skiljer sig mellan språk och är därför ej identiska för svenska resp engelska):

  Här följer ett exempel där det inte kan vara komma före "and":
  "Linear attenuation was used and also looked good in our game."
  eftersom man här inte kan byta ut "and" mot punkt + stor bokstav. "and" är här en uppräkning av två saker (was used and looked good).
  Alternativt kan man skriva:
  "Linear attenuation was used, and it also looked good in our game."

• För regler om bindestreck kan ni kika här, men det är överkurs. Det finns "hyphen" (=kort bindestreck, "-",), en-dash (mellanlångt bindestreck) samt em-dash (långt bindestreck). Se t ex:

• Colons and semicolons: see https://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/colons.html

• Do not use "isn't", "won't", "we're" or similar short forms in a technical report.
  Note that the genitive form of "it" is "its", while "it's" is the short form of "it is")

• If you want to avoid using active form with "we", then you can use passive form instead.
  E.g.: "We implemented features x, y, and z..."
  you can write: "Features x, y, and z were implemented..."

• Use Word's grammar checking. Open Office's grammar checking could also be used, but has occasionally proven inferior.

• Everything you say must be 100% true (except in section Discussion where you may use speculations and hypothesize).
  E.g., instead of saying "Our game is fun", you can say
  "A user study indicates that our game is fun to play", or
  "Feedback from users show that they perceive the game as fun to play."
  You can also mention things that themselves may be totally wrong, as long as what you say is right.
  E.g.: "Microsoft claims that Direct3D is much better than OpenGL". This sentence is probably true, although the statement about Direct3D probably is not.

• Do not copy figures. You may do that from a legal point of view if you refer to the original, but it gives a lazy impression and therefore lowers the overall quality of your report. More importantly, it is unlikely that the image is created with the format that is optimal for you, concerning line widths, color choices, fonts, arrow types etc.

• In general, write numbers from zero to ten as words instead of digits.

• Swedish students should in general restrict the usage of "you" or "one". Use this with care in order to vary your language. Instead of writing
  "There are other techniques one could use." it is often better to write (compare: you can write/one can write)
  "There are other techniques that could be used."
  or instead of
  "Then, you are doomed", write
  "Then, the situation is problematic".
  "One" går bra att använda då och då, men bör användas sparsamt - d v s så att språket låter bra och varierat. Anledningen till att jag förespråkar att vara restriktiv med "one" är att många studenter helt enkelt byter ut "we" mot "one" för att variera sig.

• "We" är OK att använda nu för tiden (ändrades för några år sedan). Men det är naturligt att företrädesvis använda "we" när man faktiskt syftar på sig själv + gruppen.

• Undvik överdriven användning av "it"-konstruktioner. Variera språket. T ex,
  "It is easy to write good text.", kan hellre skrivas som
  "Writing good text is easy."

• "the" eller a/an kan oftast inte utelämnas som i svenska. Exempel:
  "I informed the captain."

• Stor bokstav på Figure, Chapter och Section, t ex i "(see Figure XX)" eller "(see Section XX)"

• Avoid writing "such as... etc" as this will be tautology.
  E.g. "such as cylinders, cones, spheres etc."
  Just write: "such as cylinders, cones, and spheres."

• Observera att "“so"” inte används på samma sätt i eng som på svenska. Är du osäker, googla eller undvik att använda ordet.

• Referenser: Anledningen till att man vill ha vetenskapliga artiklar är att de bygger på vetenskapliga fakta/undersökningar. Det går därför att härleda tillbaks varje påstående till någon typ av bevis eller argument att de är sanna. I tidningsartiklar kan t ex journalisten uttrycka sina åsikter fritt blandat med fakta för att uppnå politiskt eller annat syfte. En vetenskaplig artikel får bara innehålla fakta och sanningar/slutsatser utefter den information man har. Av denna anledning har vetenskapliga referenser generellt högre vikt än icke-vetenskapliga. Man kan fortfarande referera till icke-vetenskapliga artiklar så länge man utgår från att det som står där inte nödvändigtvis är sant i sak.

• Er rapport kommer att köras genom Urkund, och den kan hitta även små plagierade meningsfragment. Man får visserligen citera. Då skall det tydligt framgå, t ex genom att ha “citattext” med citationstecken + italic. Men, sådant gör man endast om man efteråt kommenterar, kritiserar eller analyserar texten. Inom datorgrafik är detta tämligen ovanligt.
