This course is given as part of the Research School in Genomics and Bioinformatics. We recommend that local graduate students in the Research School earn two credits from this course. This course is in two parts; the first part will be held in the Matematiskt Centrum, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, and the second part will be held at the University of Skövde.

|Course materials for part 2|
Part 1 of this course will look at database management systems. In the first two days we shall look at important database concepts, including system architecture, schemas, keys, data models and query languages. The final day will focus on "Modelling Biological Data in Hierarchies", aiming to raise awareness of the different motivating factors for constructing hierarchies in object databases, in object-oriented programs, in hierarchical vocabularies, and in frame-based systems; to look at natural hierarchies in biological data sets; to examine the role of inheritance in different kinds of computer system; to consider how these different kinds of hierarchies can co-exist with one-another.
Part 2 of this course will give an overview of data collections and bioinformatics tools that are publicly available, including biosequence data collections (nucleotide, amino acid, and EST sequences), protein structure collections, and literature reference collections. Tools covered will include those for sequence similarity searching, motif identification, protein family prediction, protein secondary and tertiary structure prediction, and transmembrane prediction. Students will be encouraged to find and use other data collections and tools relevant to their research projects.
An on-line registration form is available. Please register before 24 September 2003.
