In the Fabrication project we investigate the expressional possibilities of computational technology and textile patterns through a combination of the two. We have been looking at the combination of aesthetical qualities of textile patterns, often seen as solely decorative, and aesthetical qualities of the mobile phone with respect to the way in which it communicates through sound and vibration. We have for example done some experiments with a bag working as an accessory to a mobile phone.

The textile pattern on the bag is constructed using different layers of thermo-chromic and ordinary pigment colours and heating elements, turning the textile pattern into a dynamic, more fluent and variable display that presents incoming calls and messages.

As an accessory to a mobile phone, the bag gives an example of an alternative approach to the use of mobile phones in everyday life. We are exploring the possibilities of constructing a display that is more personal and that is more open for interpretation so that the initiative of receiving information is given to persons rather than to products. The way of exploring is hence to focus on the implications of changing the relationship between people and to them already known objects and phenomena.
