2010-12-08 Improved project-file
I've improved the project file, removing some incoherencies (!) regarding paper reviews
and adding a new text (a case description) on Animal Expression Transfer. Read more: Project
2010-11-26 Two thesis projects
I am suggesting (and will thus supervise) two thesis projects. One of them, "Aesthetic Apps" is carried out as a team effort; the aim is to create several variants of the same artifact, but to apply different aestethic ideals to it and see what happens. The other one, "Temporal Cartoon" is about exploring the use of time in design by adding temporal behavior to the colors of the shapes in a cartoon, which gives rise to all sorts of interesting interaction design issues. It can be carried out by 1-2 persons.

If you are interested in any one of the projects, send me an email, where you tell me which your key skills are, and what you would be especially interested in investigating.
2010-11-26 Extra supervision
If you want to take some time getting feedback on your essay-thoughts and
your portfolio-selection you can set up a meeting with me any one of the scheduled days (i.e. taking a short bareak from your Face...what?!?-project. I've also added the 15/12 as a possible supervision-day.

Welcome to this course which deals with the essence of interaction design – the art of designing behaviors in artifacts and changes over time – in relation to aesthetics. But what is aesthetics anyway and what has it got to do with interaction? Well, in this course we will discuss a number of aesthetic ideals, like functionalism (i.e. “form follows function” and all that), pragmatism (i.e. the notion that the aesthetic experience should engage as many senses as possible and is “in” a persons head rather than “in” the artifact) and others and explore what it is like to design for them, when concerning interaction and behavior over time.
The aim is partly to practice these things, but also that you reflect on your own aesthetic ideals and consider which design parameters you find to be the most important ones. Most of the time you will spend on working with design exercises, and making your portfolio, but some time will of course also be spent with lectures/discussions and literature seminars. We will also make a few excursions.
The course is an electable part of the master's programme in Interaction Design at Chalmers University of Technology. It is being run at the IT-University (Campus Lindholmen) in study period 2 (late fall & winter) 2008 and 2009 and perhaps even longer.
Organization
The course features both practical and theoretical parts, as well as work in groups and individual work. Lectures, literature and literature seminars give a theoretical foundation, which is immediately put into practice in a series of small exercises and one larger project. Focus is upon turning analysis and reflection into practical action. Focus is also on exchange of thoughts, feedback, designs and ideas. The course requires active participation; apart from work with the final project, participants will spend most of their study time at the IT-Universityl, working together.
