WELCOME TO AESTHETICS OF INTERACTION

081128 I'm hereby announcing a prize for the "best" presentation on the 18th! (And it's something better than choccolate...). "Best" can mean anything: interesting, funny, toughful, beautiful... Each of you have 20 minutes to your disposal.

Welcome to this entirely new course on aesthetics in relation to interaction design! But what is aesthetics? The word means “that which can be experienced with the senses”, so it must not necessarily be about beauty, as many think. Undoubtedly designing functionality is an important part of the interaction designer's work, but should it be the only aesthetic ideal - aren't there any others? Even if functionality is a goal for the artifact itself, should that include the interaction with it too, or can other parameters be of importance here? If so, which ones? What does it even mean to talk about the aesthetics of interaction? All of this and more will be discussed in the course.

The course is an electable part of the master's programme in Interaction Design at Chalmers University of Technology. It is being run at the IT-University (Campus Lindholmen) in study period 2 (late fall & winter) 2008 and 2009 and perhaps even longer.

Organization
The course features both practical and theoretical parts, as well as work in groups and individual work. Lectures, literature and literature seminars give a theoretical foundation, which is immediately put into practice in a series of small exercises and one larger project. Focus is upon turning analysis and reflection into practical action. Focus is also on exchange of thoughts, feedback, designs and ideas. The course requires active participation; apart from work with the final project, participants will spend most of their study time at the IT-Universityl, working together.
