Purpose of the course

The purpose of this course is to give the students basic knowledge, the way of thinking and practical methodologies for the user-centred design. The course will emphasise on different aspects of usability and the UCD design concept, how to approach to the UCD and how to involve users into the different design process according to the usability requirements in different design process. The course will cover a broad knowledge about UCD. After this course, the students shall be able to perform UCD and evaluate the usability in different design process, and able to go deeper into any specific design area by taking advanced lectures or even by self-study.

We do not use any book as text book. There is not any book which is good enough to cover all the aspects. So I will select different chapters from different books and some journal articles as the course material. They will be printed specially and all the students who are planning to take this course are encouraged to buy the material. It will be cheaper than any of the books you buy.

Course Modalities

The course will employ three modalities: lectures, home-exercises and a small project. These three are described in the following:

1. The students are strongly required to actively attend the lectures (föreläsningar). Some of the important information and discussion will be given in the lectures only. The students shall try to read the respective chapters (materials) before the lecture.

2. There will be a few home exercises. A short report for every exercise shall be hand-in to the teachers within a week after the home exercises are given. Student shall work individually for the home exercises. The quality of the hand-in material will be considered as part of final examination.

3. Students shall work on a small project. Students shall form groups. Students shall define (by themselves, after discussion with supervisor) one product and design its interaction interface according to the user-centred design principles. Every group will have one writing project report and will present it to everybody in the class.

The project report shall be 15 pages (not more), and according to pre-defined template (which you must download from this website). Written work which must follow the criteria. Any written work not respecting either of these, will not be commented and not be accepted.

Time schedule

Friday 9-12: lecture; 13-14, supervising the project work, guest lectures. Tuesday 9-12: group discussion and project work.

Examination

To pass the course (För godkänd kurs), the student requires finishing all the home exercises and project report.

In the 7th week, every group shall present their project study with well-prepared presentation material and demon the project. 20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes discussion.
