Lecture notes and lab instructions do not provide sufficient information for learning in the course, and it is necessary to also read other materials.

Reading List

We will not be especially careful to follow a course book. We recommend primarily that you have access to any of the following books:

Cay S. Horstmann: Java Concepts. 7ed. The book is sold in Cremona.
David J. Eck: Introduction to Programming using Java, 6th ed.. The book can be downloaded for free from the network, both in html form and as PDF.
Jan Skansholm: Java direkt. In Swedish.
Kevin Wayne, Robert Sedgewick: Introduction to Programming in Java. An excellent textbook very well chosen examples.

All four books have an accompanying website with additional materials, program examples in electronic form, etc.

Other Materials

Sun provides a lot of material related to Java, for example:

The Java Tutorials. A number of short courses for self-study, both basic (Getting Started and Learning the Java Language) and more advanced. In Getting Started it is recommended to download Sun's NetBeans as development environment: we are hesitant to the recommendation.
The Java Language Specification. The official definition of the Java language. This is not a textbook and is not directed to beginners.
Java Downloads. Have your own computer, you can download the tool so that You can compile and run Java programs on your own computer. Most flavors of Windows , Linux and Mac OS X are supported.
