Lab information for
EDA263, Computer
Security course, 11/12
Welcome to the lab
course!
Important! For Lab number 2, you need to know your IMAP password to outlook.com. If you don't know this password, you need to contact the IT support to get one set.
This page will contain all information regarding the labs, including
lab schedule and news.
There are three lab assignments in the course. These treat some
practical aspects of computer security. The purpose of the lab course
is to let you become familiar with common security mechanisms and
tools. The assignments should be done in groups of two students.
The labs require you to be physically present in the lab to do a
practical demonstration of your solution. Assignments 1 and 2 also
require a written report to be submitted to the instructors for
approval.
For lab 2 all groups NEED to attend one Lab 2 session to exchange
keys with other groups (see lab 2 instructions, Section 5.4 ). This is
a necessary step to get approved on lab 2 (=you need two groups to SIGN
your key).
Details can be found in the separate lab instructions.
NOTE: All groups shall consist of exactly two students. If you
are alone and unable to find a second student to do the labs with, sign
up for a group anyway. All single groups will be paired with other
single groups to form two-student groups.
NEWS!
NEWS! is where you look for lab related events. News items will be

Lab rooms
All labs that require physical presence are carried out in the Computer
Engineering student lab. The lab is located at floor 4 in the south
wing of the EDIT building in room 4220 or 4225. To reserve a
computer for a lab, you sign the computer booking list that
will be brought to every lecture and lab occasion.
Lab booking
Signing up for lab groups is done as follows:
- For Chalmers, SDCS, NDS and GU students: You sign for a group in
the student portal (Link
to
group registration).
- If you for some reason is unable to access the student portal, a
booking list will be brought to every lecture the first week and will
after that be available at the lab occasions.
The lab booking system for Chalmers, SDCS, NDS and GU students will
open at 2012-01-16 (Monday, course week 1).
The name of the group to which you sign up will be used for two things:
- First, it will be used to book slots on the computer booking
list.
- Second, it will be used when you submit your lab reports.
A lab slot for lab 1 (course week 2) can be booked at the lectures in
week 1. Further lab slots will need to be booked at the lab time. You
log on the computers in the lab room with your personal Chalmers login.

A list of approved or rejected hand-ins can be found here.
We will also send a mail about rejected labs.
Lab information
When submitting reports, we want you to do the following:
- Lab 1. Use your regular email client to submit the lab. That is,
do not use the email client on your lab account.
- Lab 2. Use the email client on your lab account (you will
configure it during the lab occasion) to submit your report. Also, be
sure to cc your regular email account when submitting the report.
The labPM is available here as pdf. Download
labpm.pdf.
The report sheet referred to from the labpm, lab3, is available here.
To help you with the C-programming in lab 1, there is an on-line
tutorial available here.
For lab 1 there is a signal handling tutorial available. This is a good
tutorial, but read it as Ctrl+\ sends QUIT and not ABRT.
The tutorial is available here.
